Eventually fathomable techie nightmare

Ok, so I buy three domain names and a pop email box for a client off 123-reg. All goes well, they get registered super quick and cost pretty much nothing. Problem now comes when I transfer the domains to the client, and find out that the popbox is stuck to my account. Also, they send me a nonsense email about activating the email account before I can use it. And it “might” take 24 hours to set up. So I wait a day, and send an email to the address listed, and it bounces as undeliverable.

It’s probably me being a plank, but for god’s sake, when people send out techie emails make sure the fucker matches whatever you will have to do to try and follow the instructions. We really do need “idiot’s guides” to get things sorted. I’m a nerd, and i’m lost by their instructions. I am lost in a world of accounts, passwords and email forwarding. And i’m too embarassed to email them for help.

Update

Ok, I think i’ve nailed it.

  • When you buy a POP email box using your account it is then yours, you can’t transfer it to your client’s account.
  • They send you a crap email:

Thank you for purchasing a POP3 mail box for use with your 123-reg account. This email contains important information on setting up and using your new POP3 mail box.

The login details for each POP box you have purchased is given below:

Username Password POP3 Email Account
accountname-1 xxxxxxxx accountname-1@pophost.123-reg.co.uk

IMPORTANT ACTION REQUIRED
In order to complete the setup process of your new POP3 mail box(es) you must send an email to each of your new email addresses given above. Once setup is complete, any emails that are sent to mail@domain.com will be forwarded to your POP 3 mail box.

PLEASE NOTE: Your POP3 mail box is NOT setup until you complete this final action. It can also take up to 24 hours for your new popbox to be setup.

  • What you then have to do is send an email to yourself at accountname-1@123-reg.co.uk, not send it to accountname-1@pophost.123-reg.co.uk which is what they imply that you do in that email. Wait a bit, then the POP box is set up (The pophost bit is the mailserver that you enter to your email client).
  • Cry softly to yourself that people cannot seem to write an email that makes sense and relates to the task at hand.

This isn’t the first or last time somebody will expect me to read their mind. Uni do it all the time: “We want a specific thing from you, but we’re not going to tell you what, unless you wrestle it out of us in a corridor or individually send us an email asking the same question over and over again. We don’t want to use the unit handbooks, because that is too easy.” Test your documentation people!
